Crawley had already released 11 players; the four players offered contracts aren't expected to stay either.

That is the view of John Gregory anyway.

Reports are widely spread that even though Dannie Bulman, Mat Sadler, Mike Jones and Jamie Proctor have all been offered new contracts these have come with significant pay cuts needed if they will and that is likely to see these declined.

Gregory told the Crawley News: 'I don't expect them to sign. From my point of view, I think the players at Crawley have been paid very good salaries for a League One team in the past.'

The quartet have until the end of the month to make up their minds.

Previously the 'gravy train' has paid out well, too well perhaps with the cutbacks at Broadfield needed this season.

The boss knows things have to change with the payment scheme needing to be more realistic with the money offered out.

He added: 'We have to get a little bit more realistic. In the past it's been a bit of a gravy train at Crawley. The benefactors have had to dig deep to finance salaries and we have to be a little bit more self-sufficient.

'The gravy train is over. Don't get me wrong; the players have worked hard for the club and they have earned those salaries but the harsh reality is we can't expect the benefactors to constantly put more and more money into the club.'

In spite of the need for cuts to be made Gregory does remain confident of attracting the players that he wants to make the club competitive in league one next season, do you agree?

One former Crawley player, among those released, was Gary Dicker who is already lining up a potential move to Notts County and talked up his chances of earning a move to the club.
