Crawley Begin Pitch Work

Crawley Begin Pitch Work

Following the horrific New Years period that saw many cancellations owing to the state of the pitch, work has begun in earnest to improve the quality of the playing surface at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Contractors moved in today the remove the top three inches of the playing surface, across the entire pitch and in total around 120 tonnes of soil, thatch and grass has now been removed, along with the black silty layer that has caused us problems in the past when it came to drainage and so on.

This has all now, or will be, replaced by a mixture of loam, sand and seed and the re seeding process will be completed by the beginning of next week.

Speaking to the Official Site Chief Executive Michael Dunford explained.

'This is the first extensive pitch renovation carried out for a few years. We all know the problems we experienced earlier this year. We had record rainfall but the top surface was too compacted and water couldn't get down to the drains, which we know are working perfectly fine.'

He goes on to say that with the top three inches being removed, we can get rid of that 'compact' problem and it should ensure a much better quality of pitch next season, especially during the winter months.

'Re seeding should be complete early next week and we are confident we will have a much improved playing surface which befits a League One club in time for our first pre season friendly in mid July.'

Given it was such an obvious problem, and despite the cut backs and talks of finances lately, it's good to see the club moving swiftly on this issue because the long term benefits should more than outweigh the short term cost.
