Saunders Talks Crewe & Oldham

Saunders Talks Crewe & Oldham

Manager Dean Saunders has spoken about both the Easter fixtures, our draw against Crewe and the all important victory over Oldham.

Speaking to the Crawley News Saunders admitted the Crewe match on Good Friday was particular tense and he knows we had to battle to a point even though the point didn't really do a lot for us at the time, but it could prove very vital in the run in.

'We got a point away from home and four games out of five unbeaten. We have won three, drawn one and lost one. We have bounced back from the defeat last week and we could have won it at the end there; we had one cleared off the line and an appeal for a penalty. It was a tight game. The players have dug in and I said to them that the worst thing that could happen is that it be 0-0 and that would mean we had a point. That point might keep us up.'

Moving quickly onto the Oldham game, that was a different story with a two nil victory and with four points over the Easter weekend we pulled ourselves out of the dropzone and the only complaint the former Welsh striker had was that we didn't score a larger margin in the match.

'I think we should have won by more really. We squandered a few chances and Lewis Young had a great chance at the end and the keeper had made a good save. Gavin Tomlin had a chance cleared off the line. It was a great performance but more importantly it is a great three points and looking at it, I think a few other results have gone our way as well. That`s four wins, a draw and a defeat in the last six games so the players are all doing great; they are all battling.'

As for what the three points did for us, moving us up out of the dropzone with five games remaining now, Saunders said that whilst the battle was far from over, there was an overriding sense of relief at full time.

'I`m just relieved right now that I didn`t feel like I did after the Gillingham game. That is what management is; the highs and the lows don`t add up. It`s just relief I feel now, it`s not like I`m absolutely thrilled because I know that in a couple of days we will turn our attentions to another game and we will be trying to get that one right and get a result. Today we got three points and that was what I told the players before the game; you have to produce now before we have two games to go and we need to win them both.'
